The Eiffel Tower
The radical creation of French structural engineer Gustave Eiffel was originally met with a lot of criticism when it was first built and a lot of French citizens protested its construction. It came close to being torn down in 1909 when its 20-year lease expired but it was saved because of its antenna which was used for telegraphy. Today, not only has it become a source of pride for the French people but it is recognized as being one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
